Hand surgery includes a wide range of operations on the hands, wrists, and fingers. If any of your hand’s tendons are injured, surgery may be required to repair them and restore mobility to the affected fingers or thumb. Plastic surgeons perform hand surgeries to restore finger and hand function. But they also try to bring back the hand’s natural form.

Reasons To Have Hand Surgery

There are several reasons to undergo hand reconstruction surgery, including:

  • Injury in the hands
  • Hand infections
  • Rheumatic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Issues with the hands that exist from birth

Hand Surgery Types

Several different types of procedures can be performed on the hand. The actual cause of the problem will determine it. The following conditions may benefit from hand surgery:

Trigger finger release

The term “trigger finger” refers to a hand ailment known medically as stenosing tenosynovitis. It often affects the thumb or ring finger and occurs when something inflames a strip of tissue known as a “pulley,” which secures the tendon to the finger bone.  So, if rest, splints, exercises, anti-inflammatory medicines, and steroid injections fail and your trigger finger prevents you from performing the activities you regularly do, you and your doctor may consider hand surgery.

Tendon repair

Tendons are fibrils that connect muscle to bone.  Tendon injuries can happen as a result of an infection, trauma, or a sudden rupture. Tendon repair can be classified into three types: primary, secondary, and delayed primary.

Skin grafts

The skin grafts for the hand include restoring or connecting skin to a missing area of the hand. It is performed by connecting a portion of healthy skin from another region of the body, known as the donor site, to the wounded area.

Nerve repair

A hand injury can harm the nerves in the hand.  This can result in a loss of hand function as well as a loss of sensation in the hand. Generally, nerve damage can recover on its own in some cases while others could need surgery. In most cases, surgery is performed a few weeks following the accident.

Joint replacement

In situations of severe hand arthritis, arthroplasty is performed. It entails using an artificial joint to replace a joint that has been ruined by arthritis. This prosthetic joint might be composed of silicone rubber, plastic, metal, or even your own bodily tissue, like a tendon.

Fasciotomy hand surgery

Treating compartment syndrome is done with this method. When swelling and added pressure develops in a confined area, or compartment, of the body, this uncomfortable condition results.  Blood flow to the body’s tissues may be impeded by this pressure, which might lead to organ failure. A compartment syndrome in the hand can lead to excruciating discomfort that becomes worse with time, as well as muscular weakening.

Carpal tunnel surgery

This surgery is performed to treat and perhaps mend the painful disease known as carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome can also be induced by an accident, such as a sprain or fracture, or by using a vibrating gadget repeatedly.

Replantation hand surgery

Hand surgery attaches a bodily part that has been cut or separated from the body, such as a finger, hand, or toe. The purpose is to re-establish as much functionality as feasible. Microsurgery is used in replantation. This is a sophisticated sort of surgery that requires the use of tiny tools and is performed under magnification with a microscope.

Wrist Surgery Types

People with rheumatoid arthritis frequently experience wrist joint arthritis. If the joint is painful and not responding to previous treatments, some patients may require surgery. Wrist surgery types include:

  • Wrist fusion
  • Wrist joint replacement

How is Hand Surgery Performed?

Common hand surgery is a one-day procedure using regional anaesthesia. Even though general anaesthesia and an overnight hospital stay are not common, they are necessary for certain hand surgeries, such as those performed on children or those that take a long time. The hand’s tiny structures are handled by the surgeon using small equipment, and the little nerves and arteries in the hand may be repaired using magnifying glasses or an operating microscope.

Hand Surgery Advantages

  • Improved hand function
  • Long-lasting pain reduction
  • Improved hand appearance

Hand Surgery Risks

Risks related to hand surgery vary widely depending on the type of operation done and can include:

  • Anaesthesia risk
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Hand or finger sensation or movement loss
  • Slow recovery
